Artistic approach

Artistic approach Inspired by the phenomena of nature, zoology, biology and physics, Ferdinand Facklam intuitively explores the transformation and enhancement of urban contexts. In his work, the artist builds on his conceptual ideas by using innovative materials and by creating a unique and harmonious interaction with the environment. Facklam’s art is informed by a kind of precise phenomenology due to its computer aided design, careful choice of high quality materials and meticulous execution.

Art and technology

In Facklam’s art the computer – machine of logic and precision – rises above the mere processing of data. Here the computer also acts as a generator, a creator. While following the programme as conceptualised by the artist, it yet comes to lead a life of its own. The art is more than the sum of its parts. The work is a fusion of the adapted elements of nature and the environment they are placed in. The computer-created matrix can be modelled for any surrounding, uniquely and individually reinvented.

Process and materiality

In the works of Ferdinand Facklam, the art piece itself is juxtaposed with the process of technical implementation. Materiality takes on a special significance through the passionate use of art as an aesthetic means to improve the quality of life in urban spaces. In the subtle interweaving and contrasting of elements, the artist opens up spaces of thought and emotion that are accessible to everyone.

Ferdinand Facklam, an architectural draftsman, gained valuable experiences at Herzog & de Meuron and later as an architect. He deepened his knowledge and expertise, as student of Prof. Arthur Rüegg and Prof. Hans Kollhoff at the ETH in Zurich. Upon this, he attained a Master of Advanced Studies in CAAD at the ETH Zurich under Prof. Ludger Hovestadt.
